Kerala: Be just and decent, CM Pinarayi Vijayan to cops
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stressed the need for cops to ensure justice to all those who approach them as well as to ensure proper behaviour. The maiden conference of senior police officers across the state convened by the Chief Minister was a sort of introductory one, with Mr Vijayan prescribing his priorities.
During the nearly 30-minute closed-door deliberation, the Chief Minister cautioned the cops that indecent behaviour on the part of the police often snowballed into major controversies. He directed the police officials to give patient hearing to all those who approach police stations. Senior officials were directed to carry out frequent inspections at police stations.
Ensuring the safety of women, children and dalits was also stressed by the Chief Minister. Citing the alarming increase of crime against women and children, Mr. Vijayan directed that cops should take extra efforts to ensure their safety and quick response to distress calls. The police should reach out to the dalit areas to address their issues.
The Chief Minister also warned of stringent action against corruption in police force. He indicated that there would be changes of police officers as part of making the force corruption-free. Meanwhile, there were also reports that the Chief Minister directed the state police chief to handpick officers with integrity to be posted in the mainstream law and order.
Additional chief secretary (Home) Nalini Netto, state police chief Loknath Behera and other senior IPS officers were present at the conference held at the police headquarters. The district police chiefs joined the conference through video conferencing.
