Hyderabad: A stretch of road in Miyapur, from Matrusri Nagar towards Calvary Temple Road, is in such a dilapidated condition that the pothole-riddled stretch elicited comparisons with craters found on uninhabited planets on Twitter.
As the pictures of the stretch went viral, netizens started terming it as ‘Mars on Earth’, while a comment on Hyderabad ‘not going just global, but universal too’ elicited funny responses and ripostes on social media.
However, angry residents of the area were quick to highlight the issue to authorities, demanding swift action to remedy the same.
“With not much traffic on a normal day in this area — as it's not essentially a main road — people tend to ride or drive faster than usual. With the road in such a condition, it will soon become an accident-prone stretch, if not fixed,” said Manuchander Bala, a resident.
Residents said that multiple complaints made to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation fell on deaf ears.
“Even the one time the officials came and checked, they offered a temporary solution that we didn't agree to and rightly so. They went ahead with it anyway and the result is there for all to see today,” said Bishapati L.V., another resident.
“The rains in the past month wreaked havoc and the same will happen if a permanent solution is not worked up before the impending monsoon,” a third resident chimed in.
A GHMC official said that he was unaware of the situation. “It must be on Twitter and we will look into it. But we can also be reached via our numbers or our office,” he said.
However, the GHMC’s Twitter account had responded to the tweet, tagging officials of Moosapet, who were unavailable for comment.
Kukatpally zonal commissioner V. Mamata said that she wasn't aware of the situation either, but assured of action. “Though the road doesn't come under our jurisdiction, rather Serilingampally,” she said, even as residents maintained that it was in the Kukatpally zone.
Residents also called for regular cleaning of the area and roads, claiming that the heat, coupled with waste and dust, has caused the craters.
