VACB records statements of RBDCK officials on flyover

The project was implemented by RBDCK through a contractor based in Mumbai.

Kochi: As part of the inquiry into the corruption charges in the Palarivattom flyover construction, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) recorded the statements of the officials of Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala Limited (RBDCK) on Tuesday.

The officials, including GM, DGM and engineers, appeared at the VACB office in Kochi where the sleuths recorded their statements based on the estimates and project reports which were earlier verified. The project was implemented by RBDCK through a contractor based in Mumbai.

The Vigilance also asked the officials with the KITCO, the consultancy agency of the flyover project, to appear at the office on Wednesday for statement collection. The statement of the contractor is likely to be recorded on Friday, officials said. "The samples we had collected from the bridge last week have been sent to the central laboratory for the analysis and the result is expected by next week," an official said.

According to officials, a case will be registered based on the evidence collected as part of the preliminary inquiry conducted by VACB Ernakulam district unit.

The flyover was closed on May 1 after cracks were found at different parts of the bridge and a flaw in its construction was detected. Initially, it was planned to close the bridge for 30 days. Later an IIT Chennai team visited the bridge and decided to close it for three months. The initial examination found cracks on girders and pier caps caused reportedly due to inadequate usage of cement and steel.
