Temporary truce at Albertian Institute of Technology students strike

College authorities said the classes would resume on Wednesday.

KOCHI: The management of the Albertian Institute of Technology (AIT), Kalamasserry, moved in swiftly on Tuesday to defuse an agitation in the campus by a section of students, who were protesting against harassments by college management. College authorities said the classes would resume on Wednesday.
College principal, vice- principal and a few faculty members held a discussion with representatives of the students. One of the students who attended the meeting said that the college management has assured that it would consider the demands raised by the students. A grievance cell, comprising three teachers, has also been constituted for the timely intervention of the college authorities.

“The college authorities have sought a one-week time to look into the issues raised by the students and we have agreed to the suggestion,” said the student representative. Classes were disrupted by a section of students on Tuesday when the college authorities declined to hold discussion with the agitators. Around 200 students, out of the 800 in the campus, triggered a protest on Monday alleging harassment by the management, including slapping of heavy fines, serving poor quality food and threats of lower grades for internal assessment.
