Telangana government in a hurry but experts call a halt
Hyderabad: Procurement of high-end machines used for MRI, CT scans and mammograms for the district hospitals in Siddipet, Medak and other area hospitals is being insisted upon despite adverse remarks from the biomedical engineers.
In the proposals submitted by the TS Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation, the engineers made a note marking it as ‘inappropriate and not-required’.
A senior engineer, on condition of anonymity, said, “Demand for the equipment was raised at the corporation. The demand has to come from the doctors. For a CT scan, a neurosurgeon is required fulltime in the hospital but they are not there. These questions are important. The government must re-look into the issue.”
Senior doctors attach-ed to Vaidya Vidhan Parishad, director of health and DMHO say that the requirement has been created at the higher level and they have been asked to demand the same.
A senior doctor said, “More than anything, we need basic staff. Then we can think of super-specialists and surgeons. However, the government wants to procure equipment first and then make appointments.”
DMHO Dr M. Ramani said, “The government is contemplating whether the appointment is to be done by it or through the commission. There will be proper appointments done as there are existing vacancies and the new equipments too will require trained staff.”
With over Rs 100 crore being spent in acquiring 20 high-end machines in seven area hospitals, the concern is being raised whether the equipment will be put to appropriate use.
