Muslim Leaders Call for Simple Weddings, Food Service to End

Hyderabad: In a break from tradition, a Muslim man, while inviting guests to his son’s ‘nikah’, that took place on January 11, apologised for not arranging food for the guests, citing traditions under the ‘Sunnah’ and terming dinner after ‘nikah’ an “un-Islamic tradition.”

‘Sunnah’ is the Arabic term for ‘the way of Prophet Mohammed’, as per which the demand for dinner after a wedding amounts to ‘haram’, according to Islamic traditions, religious leader Raheem Makki told Deccan Chronicle.

Religious leaders said that the groom’s parents were insisting that the bride’s family make extravagant arrangements, including booking an expensive function hall and arranging for food as per a given menu.

M.A. Ahad Qureshi, High Court advocate, said, “It’s very unfortunate to witness the way people are hosting grand weddings,” and added that their religious traditions emphasised simplicity.

He said that the celebrations, which sometimes stretch for a week, disrupt children’s studies.
