Kite flying adds to this year\'s Sankranti celebrations

The pleasant weather added to the enjoyment after a cloudy morning and slight sprinkles of rain in some parts of the city on Friday

Hyderabad: Vibrant hues of kites in the sky and colourfully made rangolis in front of every household, typify the joyousness that the harvest festival Sankranti brings along.

This year, the delight is doubly more as the festival has come on a weekend and educational institutions are having holidays. The last two years were dull on account of the pandemic.

Despite the threat of Covid-19 and its protocol being in place, music and loud shrieks and shouts were found on most terraces as people enjoyed flying kites and their competitions with neighbors. The pleasant weather added to the enjoyment after a cloudy morning and slight sprinkles of rain in some parts of the city on Friday.

Many areas are popular for fixing halogen lights on the terrace. This year the kite flying competitions will extend to Sunday. Dindayal Singh Loda from Karvan said “this Sankranti, we have witnessed more kites and a lot of families are participating.”

Areas like Chappal Bazar, Kabutar Khana, parts of Begum Bazar are popular for flying kites in the night, thanks to most residents' halogen lamps on their terraces. Friends and relatives from other localities join in the celebrations.

According to K. Prabaker, a resident of Kabutar Khana “This practice started more than two decades ago. This trend has spread to many parts of the city.”
