Velpur residents protest for delay in road widening

Nizamabad: A tense situation prevailed at Velpur on Wednesday after around 1,500 residents of the village staged a protest against the delay in road widening. Citing the disputed land, the officials have been ignoring the works on the road widening for the last few years. Caste organisations called for the protest for the inordinate delay in the works. To avoid any untoward incident, police forces were deployed in the village during the protest.

The Muslim community in the village had raised objections over the widening of the road through the land of Idgah and heaps of gravel for the last few months. They also lodged complaints with the Lokayukta over the alleged encroachment of 4.12 guntas of Idgah land. Police forces led by Additional DCP (law and order) Jayaram rushed to the village and managed to call off the protest by convincing the protesters. The residents stated that they would intensify the protest if the issue was not resolved within a week. They urged the officials to conduct a survey to demark the disputed land.
