Offer NCC as elective, UGC tells varsities

Besides the regular training, the cadets will be trained in personality development and communication skills.

Chennai: University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all universities to implement National Cadet Corps (NCC) training course as an elective subject across the country.

This elective course would impart strategic, military and policy-based education to students and it would help them choose a career in defence services. Besides the regular training, the cadets will be trained in personality development and communication skills.

In a circular to vice-chancellors of all the universities, UGC Secretary Jaspal S. Sandhu said, "Ministry of Human Resource Development has decided to implement NCC as an elective subject in all universities. You are, therefore, requested that you may implement the NCC as an elective subject in your university for the benefit of the students." Earlier, the UGC had introduced the course on a pilot basis in 30 universities after receiving a proposal from NCC in this regard.

While some principals from the city colleges have welcomed the UGC's move saying that it will bring discipline among the students, others pointed out that funding is a major problem for starting new NCC units.

"In rural colleges, students are more willing to join the NCC. But, the NCC would not give any additional units citing the lack of funds. Many self-financing colleges did not have a single unit," a college principal said. "These colleges also need NCC units. But, the ministry should ensure the adequate funding for these units," he added.
