North East monsoon may extend till January, say experts

According to the data from Regional Meterological Centre, Chennai airport received 26.6mm, whereas the city got a meagre 3.2mm.

Chennai: Brief spell of rains that lashed isolated regions of Tamil Nadu on Sunday has wiped away people’s fears about the lost North East monsoon, besides putting a temporary end to the trend of cold nights across the state.
Like any other coastal district, Chennai also received a good rainfall share, due to the formation of an easterly wave. According to the data from Regional Meterological Centre, Chennai airport received 26.6mm, whereas the city got a meagre 3.2mm.

Weather blogger Pradeep John told DC that the rainfall would continue for the next 48 hours across the state. On the Northeast monsoon strength, he said, “As heavy rainfall has not been experienced yet, people have assumed it to be a failed monsoon. It is very early for a conclusion and according to models, it is an extended monsoon till January this time.”

Adding to the elation of agriculturists, weather models show the formation of low pressure around November 20 in the Bay of Bengal, indicating another spell of rains. On Sunday, the Southern Tamil Nadu districts of Kanyakumari and Karaikal received 24.6mm and 22.5mm respectively.
