Hyderabad: Overdose of anaesthesia kills girl
Hyderabad: Five-year-old S. Sumathari, who was allegedly given an overdose of anaesthesia while undergoing corrective surgery to her thumb, died on October 4.
Sumathari had undergone corrective surgery for the twisted thumb and fingers of both her hands at a local hospital. She did not regain consciousness after being administered anaesthesia. This was the second surgery the little girl had undergone this year. Her father Satyanarayan says, “I have already spent Rs 2 lakh for her treatment.”
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr B Subhash said, “We had explained all the complications before the surgery and also taken a video consent of the parents. This was the second surgery which we were undertaking. They were very happy with the first one which was done in January 2016. Till the end, I have visited the child at the Inst-itute of Neuro Sciences and have been monitoring her condition but she failed to recover despite medications.”
The parents have returned home to Adilabad but they have filed a complaint with the Telangana Medical Council against Dr B Subash who is in-charge of surgery.”
