Cauvery water row: Wedding plans go out of gear

Krishnagiri: The marriage venue of a Tamil migrant worker was changed to Tiruvanamalai from Basavangudi in neighbouring Karnataka because his relatives are afraid to visit Bengaluru due to recent unseemly incidents.

Ranjith (25) was supposed to tie the nuptial knot on 22-year-old Sowmiya at a private marriage hall at Basavangudi on Wednesday.

But relatives decided to conduct the marriage in the famous Tiruvannamalai temple saying their relatives in Tamil Nadu are not interested to take part if the wedding was held in Bengaluru.

“Changed the venue to Tiruvanamalai because our relatives in Tamil Nadu are afraid of visiting Bengaluru” Ranjith, a daily wage worker told reporters. “My family migrated to Basavangudi 40 years ago searching for livelihood but continue to live in fear if any trouble arises due to the Cauvery issue,” he added.

Ranjith, his bride Sowmiya and their relatives came to Attibelle in a private cab and from there walked to cover a distance of about 2 kilometers to reach the interstate border.

Tamil Nadu auto drivers, operating a free service for passengers till Zuzuvadi where Tamil Nadu buses waited for the people, transported them to catch the bus to Tiruvannamalai.

“It was really an unforgettable experience for us because we have to change the venue for solemnising our marriage in the presence of our relatives in Tamil Nadu” Sowmiya said.
