Kochi Corporation plans Car-Free Day' on September 25

On the day, cars will be diverted at the beginning of the stretch with the help of traffic police.

Kochi: The Kochi Corporation will organise 'Car-Free Day' on September 25 when the citizens will be urged to forgo cars and opt for cycle or public transport to commute. The drive will be mainly carried out in the Panampilly Nagar stretch from 3 pm to 7 pm through the participation of residents associations and educational institutions among others.

"Various campaigns will be carried out to make aware the benefits of walking and cycling, which will reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Various cultural and sport events will also be held as part of the campaign," said Mayor Soumini Jain. The Panampilly Nagar stretch, which contains a walkway-cum-cycling track, will be showcased as a model stretch.

On the day, cars will be diverted at the beginning of the stretch with the help of traffic police. Residents have also assured of not using motor vehicles. "We're aiming to carry out the campaign in the entire city though," Ms Jain said. The initiative is implemented in tie-up with various social organisations and educational institutions like the Rajagiri School of Social Sciences.
