Women take on drug peddlers in Kozhikode

Aged 18 to 50, women of Nadee Nagar take turns to guard the area from drug peddlers.

KOZHIKODE: The women of Nadee Nagar, near Panniyankara, especially mothers, finally decided that they would not let their children to fall prey to the drug pedlars in the area. Adding to their headache was the frequent fights between the buyers and sellers and a similar fight between two men, was the immediate cause of bringing these women on to the street, to defend and ward off the miscreants. These women, aged 18 to 50, are taking turns and guarding the area including the beach and the alleys in the area, which does not have proper lighting during the night, said councillor advocate C.K. Zeenath.

“When the women volunteered themselves to guard the area, especially to prevent their children from falling victims to the drug pedlars, we informed the police and Kasaba CI P. Pramod gave all the support, especially women cops to help us and torches to use during night. However, the immediate request to the KSEB and Corporation is to fix the street lights along the sea wall and the alleys, since the exchange of drugs is taking place mainly in the dark of night,” said Adv Zeenath.

According to a senior member of the gang of around 200, Jayasree AV, they purposefully kept men out of the team, since many a times, the verbal clashes might turn out to be physical abuses. “The majority of the residents here are either daily wage labourers or fishermen, who can be easily influenced. Since this area is closer to the beach, the menace of the outsiders is also maximum,” she said, adding that after their patrol, that started on Monday, the issues have reduced in the area.
