Odisha: Bride snaps marriage as baraatis create scenes over shortage in mutton curry

BHUBANESWAR: A groom, his family members and friends in Odisha’s Sundergarh were on Sunday evening taught such a lesson that they would expectedly remember it all through their life.

Reports from Sundergarh on Wednesday said the groom, who is a banker working with a nationalised bank, took out a procession along with baraatis on Sunday evening and reached the bride's home at Ainthapali in Sambalpur district at around midnight.

During the wedding feast, the mutton curry fell short and the last seven to eight baraatis could not be served the same.

Since it was already late in the night, the bride’s family expressed their helplessness in arranging mutton at that odd hour.

But, the baraati’s demand for mutton soon turned into a major issue. Upset over the behaviour of the baraatis, most of whom appeared to be heavily drunk, the bride Sangya Sucharita Behera decided not to go ahead with solemnization of the marriage.

“Everything was in place. Even the mutton was served to most of the baraatis. But the non-veg dish finished before the last six or seven persons could eat. Then they started arguing with my father accusing him of mismanagement,” said Sangya.

Stating that her parents and other family members urged the baraatis to keep quiet and tried to pacify them by offering chicken and fish instead, they were adamant in their demand for mutton and started misbehaving with them.

"My 70-year-old father even prostrated before the groom’s father, his relatives and desperately pleaded with them to maintain peace. But they were unmoved and kept on creating scenes. It seemed wrong to me and I told them (the groom and his entourage) to leave the place forthwith. I just wondered that when they are torturing my parents and family members to such an extent over mutton curry, what would be my fate once I get married and go to that family?” the bride added.

She added that she had no worries over snapping the wedlock event and her parents were happy that she mustered courage to teach the unruly groom, his family members and baraatis.
