Chilkur Balaji temple remains closed

Believing the online search results, some devotees were arriving at the temple only to return home disappointed

Hyderabad: The Chilkur Balaji temple has not opened and continues to remain closed due to the Coronavirus infections and spread of the disease, chief priest of the temple Dr C.S. Rangarajan said on Saturday.

In a statement, Dr Rangarajan said some people were looking up information on the temple online and coming across information snippets about the temple including its opening and closing times that get listed. The searches online were incorrectly showing that the temple was open since June 8 when in fact it had not reopened at all, he said.

Believing the online search results, some devotees were arriving at the temple only to return home disappointed, with some of them saying they found information that the temple was open when they searched on Google.

According to a release from Dr Rangarajan, Google said “the snippets feature is an automatic and algorithmic match to the search query, and the content comes from third-party sites. We’re always working to improve our algorithms, and we welcome feedback on incorrect information."

‘Devotees of Chilkur please report on the incorrect information through a ‘feedback’ button at the bottom right of the featured snippet, Dr Rangarajan said.
