Kochi Metro offers state-of-the-art ride
Kochi: The Kochi Metro stations and trains boast of several world class safety and security features. The platforms have mainly two emergency devices – Emergency Trip System (ETS) and Emergency Stop Plunger (ESP). Upon encountering an emergency situation like a passenger falling onto the tracks, one can open the ETS box and press the red button inside. The power flow along the Third Traction will be cut immediately, and the passenger can be rescued. One can also use the hot telephone line to communicate with the traffic desk of the Operation Control Centre (OCC).
Similarly, if the ESP box is opened by breaking the glass with a metal rod, one can push the button inside which would immediately result in running trains coming to a sudden halt. The safety features in metro coaches are equally impressive. Each car has the Passenger Emergency Intercom (PEI) equipment placed near the doors. Upon any emergency situation, the commuters can push the button and establish contact with the train operator.
However, misuse of all these emergency devices will invite strict penal action. The coaches also boast of other safety features like Closed CCTV (surveillance cameras), fire and smoke detection system and multiple holding areas for passengers – quadrupole, hand handles, grab rails near door and gangway areas among others.
