Catholicos see a guardian angel in CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Baselios Marthoma Paulose told reporters that the Church no longer felt politically orphaned.

Thiruvananthapuram: Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II, head of the Orthodox Church, called on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Cliff House on Monday. The delegation comprising Church leaders spent about 15 minutes with the chief minister. Baselios Marthoma Paulose told reporters that the Church no longer felt politically orphaned. “We were like orphans till now. But now there is a sense of feeling that we have a guardian,” he said while referring to the new LDF government.

He said though the Church leaders had received an invite to attend the LDF government’s swearing-in ceremony on May 25, they could not make it to the event. This was also the reason behind their delegation’s meeting with the chief minister on Monday.

“We hope the new government will resolve the issues pertaining to the Church amicably and hear our views. Since it was a courtesy call, we didn’t discus other issues,” he added. It may be recalled that the Church had been aggrieved over the indifferent attitude of the previous UDF government over implementing the court order.
