Iftars by non-Muslims are a big hit

HYDERABAD: Hosting Iftar parties is the order of the day with even Hindus organising such parties for their Muslim friends. This is quite popular in Osman Shahi where old tyre shop owners near Shanker Sher Hotel organise Iftar parties in what can be a classic example of communal amity and brotherhood that is symbolic of Hyderabad’s ganga-jamuna tehzeeb.

A shopkeeper, Rakesh Lal Yadav, said, “We have been organising this for the last 12 years. We take part in all festivals together.”

Umesh lal Yadav, another shop owner, said, “Each one takes an enthusiastic part in our Iftar programmes, including those working in shops.”

A member of the Bonthapally family, which hosts an Iftar party near the Macca Masjid, said, “My grandfather was a goldsmith. He came up with this idea, while he was passing through Charminar one day. We are continuing the tradition.”
