Hyderabad: Victims not registered, families likely to lose Rs 6.25 lakh relief
Hyderabad: The victims would have been eligible for a compensation of Rs 6.25 lakh from the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, had they been registered with it.
But since they are not registered they are not eligible for the compensation. However they will be provided Rs 70,000 each from the labour department in addition to the compensation announced by the GHMC and the builder.
Any worker in the building or construction sector can register themselves by paying Rs 110 to the Labour department, and he/she will be eligible for an insurance of Rs 6.25 lakh which is applicable for a five year period.
But officials who visited the site said that both the workers who died on Monday were not registered with the board, and so they will not be eligible for the insurance. But they will be paid Rs 70,000 each as per the board’s policy for unregistered workers. However, in exceptional cases, the government may sanction the Rs 6.25 lakh compensation also to unregistered workers.
The GHMC announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the deceased.
The builder also declared a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to each of the victims and also agreed to bear the medical expenses of the two injured.
In addition to this, Mayor B. Rammohan also granted Rs 50,000 each to meet the funeral expenses of the victims. Officials from the labour department said the victims can file a case in the labour court against the builder or whoever is responsible for the incident.
“The court may order the builder to pay the victims compensation depending on the damage caused which is around Rs 8 lakh,” officials from the labour department said.
