398 Telangana schools get no students
Hyderabad: Government schools in Hyderabad are doing better than in other districts if one goes by the data of the education department on admissions reported in schools in the academic year that is just ending. Not a single government school reported zero admissions in the capital while the state figure stood at 398.
Nalgonda district presents a different picture: 109 primary schools reported zero admissions. This follows Warangal, where parents did not show interest in enrolling their children in the first standard in 86 primary schools. In Karimnagar, 64 schools had zero enrolment, Mahbubnagar 45 schools and Adilabad 36 schools. Teachers were of the opinion that government should make public the reasons for zero admissions instead of just counting the number of schools.
“The reasons may be lack of adequate teaching staff or parents showing interest in sending their children elsewhere,” said a union leader, adding that the government might order closure of such schools from next academic year.
School education director M. Kishan said his team would analyse the reasons for zero enrolment. “There may be a variety of reasons, which we will consider before taking a final decision,” he said.
