Kozhikode: Re-birth for recycling unit
KOZHIKODE: Minister for Local Self Government K.T. Jaleel inaugurated the plastic recycling unit of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation at West Hill on Tuesday. After being abandoned for years, the unit is getting a rebirth from the waste management division of Niravu Farmers’ Production Company. Inaugurating the unit, the Minister said that the initiative taken by Niravu would be the best solution to clear the heaps of waste that were deposited in various parts of the city.
The Government will make sure more such units are developed in various parts of the State. Recently a decision was made to introduce 15 such units in the District and the Westhill unit of the waste management plant was the first step towards it, he added. Niravu has approved Rs 30,000 to be given every month to the City Corporation as rent for taking up this space, besides the electricity bill that would come to '1 lakh, said the health standing committee chairman K.V. Baburaj. “We will also help Niravu provide sufficient employees to run this unit, with the help of our Kudumbashree sanitary workers,” he added.
As per the plan, the Corporation will collect waste from all the 75 wards and of this non- biodegradable waste brought would be cleaned and segregated at the plant. Later the segregated waste would be taken for shredding and supplied to the Public Works Department or any other agency for road work. Hence the non-biodegradable waste would turn into a useful raw material, said V Baburaj, adding “the plant will help us to convert the city to a plastic free zone.”
