Hyderabad: People from the twin cities heading to their hometowns to celebrate Sankranti festival had to wait for hours at different toll plazas, especially those on the Vijayawada highway, on Saturday.
Law and order and traffic police from Bhongir and Yadadri district instructed toll plaza operators to open all gates.
Following a huge line at Korlaphad toll plaza, nine of the 12 counters were allocated for vehicles heading towards Vijayawada.
“This happens every year. Families heading to their hometown to celebrate the festival have to wait for hours. Our personnel used to provide them drinking water while clearing the vehicles from the gates,” a police officer said.
Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu, who on Saturday evening visited Panthangi toll plaza, said that they had made suitable arrangements in order to avoid traffic jams and chaos like on Friday. “Our officers are engaged in controlling and diverting vehicles depending on the situation,” he said.
