Muslims come together for Sankranti

Vijayawada: In an act of communal harmony, the Muslim community celebrated Sankranti under the auspices of Muslim Samkshema Samithi (MSS) in Vijayawada on Sunday, reflecting the ‘unity in diversity’ of secular India, and felicitated farmers for their services to feed the hunger of society.

Vijayawada 19th Division corporator Rehana Nahid and Krishna Lanka CI K. Durga Rao started the Sankranti festival celebrations held under the auspices of the MSS at Labbipet in Vijayawada.

Durga Rao said, “It is a good development to celebrate Sankranti under the leadership of Muslim brothers.” Sankranti is a festival of farmers. Everyone should celebrate the festival together regardless of caste and religion, he added.

President of the MSS Muktar Ali said that they had been celebrating Sankranti for the last few years with the intention of respecting the customs, traditions, and rituals of other religions.

Rehana Nahid said, “Sankranti is the festival of harvest. Hence, all should remember and respect farmers in Sankranti. VMC co-option member Syed Aleem and Wakf board director of Krishna district Mohammed Abid said that the celebration of Sankranti by Muslims was a symbol of religious harmony.
