Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Massive Ganja Haul in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: A 30-year-old man, Prabhakar, hailing from Korba in Chhattisgarh, has been handed a severe sentence of 10 years of imprisonment by Metropolitan Session Judge and First Additional District Judge S. Sridevi. The judgment was delivered on Wednesday.

Prabhakar was convicted for the illegal transportation of approximately 1,800 kilograms of dry ganja in an ambulance during an incident that occurred in February 2019. Y.N. Srinivas, the special public prosecutor of the court, reported that in addition to the imprisonment, the judge imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the convicted drug peddler.

The arrest was made by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Visakhapatnam, when they intercepted an ambulance at Pendurthi locality in Vizag city on February 21, 2019. The investigation revealed that the vehicle was laden with over 1,800 kilograms of dry cannabis and was en route from Seeleru in ASR district to Chhattisgarh.

This marks the second instance in the state where an individual has received a 10-year jail term under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
