Hyderabad city sees alarming rise of upper respiratory infections

Hyderabad: Over the past 15-20 days, a concerning surge in upper and lower respiratory tract infections, coupled with a rise in post-viral tussive episodes, has prompted doctors to issue warnings and precautionary measures.

Dr. Vyakarnam Nageshwar, a pulmonologist and allergist, stressed on the consistent use of face masks during daily routines.

The situation is compounded by the weather pattern in Hyderabad. Day temperatures are hovering around 27-28°C with fog lingering up to noon, creating a false sense of warmth, and night temperatures are plummeting to 17 degrees in several areas of the city.

Dr. Nageshwar said that fluctuating temperatures can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. He added that the city is seeing an increase in cases of post-viral tussive (persistent dry cough), which are attributed to the month-long coughs that follow viral infections, including influenza A&B,

Dr Krishna Madhala spoke about the vulnerability of elderly, children and those with existing lung disorders like asthma, COPD and bronchitis.

He said that cases haven't been as many and not as bad in the districts. It has been triggered in the city by the cold weather coupled with pollution.

Dr. Anand Raj, an infectious disease specialist, seconded Dr. Nageshwar’s opinion, and said, "Apart from face masks, it's equally important for individuals to practice good respiratory hygiene and maintain social distancing to contain the transmission of respiratory viruses."
