Thiruparankundram by-poll: Rs 2.24 crore, jewels seized

The Madurai city and rural police have booked 83 cases against political parties for various violations so far.

Madurai: The district election officer has seized unaccounted cash and jewels worth Rs 2.24 crore in the last 24 days in the run-up to the Thiruparankundram by-election scheduled on November 19.

The district election office had issued strict instructions to the public to carry valid documents if they transport cash above Rs 10 lakh to prevent malpractice in the by-election.

However, when the flying squad and static surveillance teams conducted vehicle checks in all routes in and around Madurai, they seized Rs 2.24 crore, which included 4.142 kg gold and 58.75 silver jewels worth Rs 1,46,37,037. The official handed over the cash and jewellery to the district Treasury.

The Madurai city and rural police have booked 83 cases against political parties for various violations so far.

As many as 29 cases were booked against AIADMK men, 18 cases against DMK, three cases against DMDK and one case against a BJP functionary, official sources said.
