CM Pinarayi Vijayan assures fair probe in Shamna Tasnim case

The state-level medical board is set it to take up the case of medical negligence at its sitting on November 24.

KOCHI: Giving fresh hopes in the investigation in the death of medico Shamna Tasnim, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured patron of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Movement Prof. M.K. Sanu that law will take its course in the case. The assurance to Prof. Sanu when he met the CM on the occasion of the inauguration of the Kochi Cancer Research Centre at Kalamassery on Friday, comes in the wake of reports that there are moves at the highest level to reinstate two doctors of Ernakulam Government Medical College suspended for medical negligence in the case.

The Chief Minister is learnt to have given the same assurance to K.A. Abootty, father of Shamna who came all the way from Kannur to request for rendering justice to the family in the case. Mr Abootty told DC that what shocked him most was the act of medical college authorities to remove his already dead daughter to another hospital to escape responsibility. “She was dead by 3.45 pm and how can they take her to another private hospital. Is she not one belonging to their own college which is their family,” in a choking voice he asked.

Meanwhile health minister K.K. Shylaja whom also Abootty met told him that the Chief Minister is dealing with the file of suspension of the two doctors and he will take a decision on it. She told media that the government was trying to take an unbiased decision in the issue of medical negligence. An upset Abootty was seen meeting a host of police and other officials, political leaders and leaders of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Movement including Prof. Sanu and K.R. Viswambharan at the opening function of the cancer centre. The state-level medical board is set it to take up the case of medical negligence at its sitting on November 24. Joint director of Medical Education Dr K Sreekumari is currently making a detailed departmental inquiry into the case.
