Koyilandy harbor nearing completion
KOZHIKODE: The fishing harbour at Koyilandy will be ready by early December, after much controversies and agitations. The work taken up more than half a decade ago will be completed at the cost of Rs 64 crore from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) of the National Bank of Agricultural and Rural Development and also the MLA fund.
“We have completed work worth Rs 57 crore so far, and expect to finish the rest in a month. Pulimuttu, auction hall, the wharf and the approach road from the NH, Koyilandy,” said Muhammed Ansari, the assistant executive engineer. Works on the second auction hall with modern facilities, parking, waste management plant and electrical are pending. The harbour, one of the largest in the district, will have a fish auction yard, diaphragm wall, net mending shed, retaining wall and concrete road.
The 100-metre diaphragm will facilitate fishers anchor their boats without any hitch even during high tides. It will serve over 300 anglers of a cluster who were depending on the nearest harbours. It will now minimise their fishing schedule and ensure immediate marketability through a direct operation.
