Walkers rescue lost fawn from pack of stray dogs

Two forest officials went to the spot and after a massive effort, trapped the frightened fawn.

Chennai: Timely efforts of civilians have saved a life of a spotted fawn, which missed its way at Sallur Reserve forest on Tuesday.

Walkers at Sallur reserve forest, which comes under the limits of Chengalpet forest range, noticed a barely 20-day-old fawn, chased by a group of stray dogs.

They immediately contacted the local police station who alerted Chengalpet Forest range office.

Two forest officials went to the spot and after a massive effort, trapped the frightened fawn. Narrating the experience, a forester said, “We could catch it only after 3 hours. There are chances of the fawn getting a heart attack if it runs fast. So, we had to be patient to ensure the animal is not scared.”

The fawn was left in the Chengalpet forest range premises, after feeding milk. According to foresters, the animal is in a healthy condition as the Chengalpet Veterinary hospital authorities observed no infections.

Trials to unite the fawn with the mother failed on Wednesday morning, as the frightened mother ran into the wild, after spotting people. The foresters would try the same on Thursday morning and if the mother does not turn up, the fawn would be handed over to Vandalur Zoo authorities, said A. Gopu, forest ranger.
