Pooja for guns: HMK chief Sampath booked
Coimbatore: The Hindu Makkal Katchi’s (HMK) state president Arjun Sampath has been booked under non-bailable sections by the cyber crime police in Coimbatore on Wednesday for performing ‘Ayudha pooja’ for guns and swords.
In a Facebook post, Mr Arjun Sampath was seen seated in front of pictures of gods and goddesses with weapons including two guns, swords and a knife on ‘Ayduha pooja’ day on October 10. As the photo went viral, muslim organisations raised a complaint with police in Chennai and Coimbatore.
The members of TPDK and Coimbatore district United Jamath petitioned city police commissioner A Amalraj on Wednesday too, demanding action against the hindu outfit leader for perpetrating arms culture and promoting enmity between religious groups by triggering tension through his post.
After enquiries, the Coimbatore cyber crime police registered a case against Mr Arjun Sampath under IPC section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 25(1) (a) of Arms Act for exhibiting arms without valid license.
Cyber crime inspector PN Rajan said that Arjun Sampath has been booked under non-bailable sections. “We are in the process of securing him for an enquiry. It is yet to be known whether the arms displayed were just air guns or rifles. Even if he holds a valid license for arms, displaying them is an offence,” he said.
On the controversy that one of the guns was that of a cop posted as security to the HMK leader, the inspector said that it needs to be enquired and is not known as of now.
