UP: Denied abortion, 14-yr-old rape victim admitted to hospital for delivery
Lucknow: A 14-year-old rape victim, whose family ran from pillar to post in order to terminate her pregnancy, was admitted to the government hospital in Bareilly on Wednesday following labour pains.
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the girl was raped several times by a man in her village, who had promised to marry her, but was abandoned after she conceived.
Ever since, the family has been unsuccessfully trying to terminate the pregnancy.
The family was declined permission to abort the baby by two courts in Bareily, following which, the family later approached the Allahabad High Court, which set up a medical board to review her case.
Due to the advanced stages of pregnancy, the board noted, termination was not a feasible option.
All hopes for the family were finally dashed on Wednesday when the girl was beset with labour pains. Accompanied by her mother, aunt and the village midwife, the girl was admitted to the government hospital.
“I cannot see her in this condition. My heart will stop. I am defeated today. I don’t know what will happen next,” said the girl’s father reportedly said.
