Kishan announces swimming pool for girls in OU hostel

Hyderabad: Union minister of tourism, culture and development of North Eastern Region G. Kishan Reddy, while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Osmania University light show on Tuesday, announced a list of upcoming projects in the city.

He announced that a budget of Rs 13 crore has been approved to build a synthetic athletic track on the OU campus and a swimming pool for the girls hostel, which will boost the sporting events and interest of students at the university.

He also said that another Rs 15 crore was approved to build two hostels — Rs 7.5 crore each for boys and girls — and requested vice-chancellor Prof. D. Ravinder to speed up the process of tenders to begin work on the same.

He added that OU is a no less than a monument, and just like Charminar and the Golconda are illuminated not only during important days like the Republic Day (January 26) and Independence Day (August 15) but throughout the year, Arts College deserves a similar recognition and celebration.

The minister also added that southern part of India lacks a good Sangeeta Nataka Academy and said that a Cultural Centre that matches the likes of Tyagaraja Gyana Sabha and Ravindra Bharati would be set up around Jubilee Hills with an estimated cost of Rs 26 crore.

Earlier, the minister inaugurated a captivating Dynamic Lighting System of Arts College, Osmania University. Developed under the Scheme of Assistance to Central Agencies of the ministry of tourism, the visual experience is aimed at illuminating the facade of the Arts College by narrating the rich history and multifaceted contributions of the university.

Ravinder said that a committee was formed to work on displaying the history of Arts College from April 1917 to date, through the shows. "The team comprised several historians and professors including Prof YS Srinivas, and Archeology professor Shivanand, among others who divided the history into 4 parts like the Hyderabad Liberation period, Vande Mataram Movement and the recent Telangana struggle," the VC said.

Kishan Reddy also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting approval for this project.
