Record rush of wedding in Tirumala hill town

Apart from the Purohita mandapam, the 33 mutts and several private choultries on the hill top bustled with marriage parties

TIRUPATI: Tirumala, the holy abode of Lord Venkateswara, witnessed a record number of marriages on Thursday and Friday coinciding with Sravana Purnima, which is considered the most auspicious muhurat for weddings.

In all, over 250 couples entered into a wedlock during the two days at the Purohita Sangham Mandapam of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), other mutts and kalyana mandapams on the hill town. While 78 marriages had been performed at Purohita Sangham Mandapam, other couples tied the knot at TTD marriage cottages, private kalyana mandapams, choultries and mutts.

Apart from the Purohita mandapam, the 33 mutts and several private choultries on the hill top bustled with marriage parties, making Tirumala appear as though a wedding town. As Saturday early hours happen to be an auspicious muhurat, scores of marriage parties have reached the temple town by late Friday night.

Commenting on the wedding spree in Tirumala, a senior TTD official said the hill town has been an ideal location for couples wishing to enter into wedlock. Even celebrities like film stars, children of business personalities, and popular politicians come to Tirumala for performing marriages.

“During summer and marriage seasons, hundreds of weddings are performed all over the hill town, where even cottages turn into wedding mandapams. This is because devotees believe that weddings conducted in Tirumala are unique and there is no record of break-up after a wedding here,” the official underlined.

Incidentally, as many as 20 weddings are performed every day at the Kalyana Vedika or Purohita Sangham Mandapam. The sangham has over 120 archakas and mangala vadyam teams. There are also ear piercing persons, who work on a 24×7 basis.
