VIJAYAWADA: The Mother Mary idol in the premises of one of the oldest churches in seaside Machilipatnam was vandalised by unidentified miscreants on Thursday night, resulting in a tense situation there.
The incident caused anguish among the local faithful and church authorities. The Holy Christ Church committee members lodged a complaint with Chilakalapudi police station at about 6am.
A police team inspected the surroundings of the church and checked the CCTV footage. It hoped to arrest the culprit(s) soon. A dog squad and a clues team were pressed into action, the Chilakalapudi police said.
Jana Sena’s Krishna district general secretary Lankisetti Balaji called upon the police to arrest the culprit(s) who vandalised the Mother Mary idol. He sought stern action against the culprits. “This incident would hurt the sentiments of the Christian brotherhood across the state,” he noted.
