Kerala Students Union camp shrugs off Maoist' label

Mr Anoop said that if they continue to circulate such messages, he would file a complaint with the police cyber cell.

Thrissur: Mr V.R. Anoop, state secretary of Rajiv Gandhi Study Circle and former KSU district treasurer, has slammed the WhatsApp campaign against him and some KSU leaders who were in favour of dissolving the KSU state committee. Mr Anoop told DC that after all the committees of KSU in the state were dissolved recently for organizational elections, a WhatsApp group of the former functionaries of the students’ union was circulating messages alleging that he has Maoist connections and that he was misleading youth leaders and MLAs V.T. Balram and Roji M. John.

“As the circle deals with academics, we adopted a new approach by inviting to our programmes people like K. Venu and Civic Chandran, who were former Naxals but who have now taken a strong stand against Maoists. Swami Agnivesh, known for his stand against Sangh Parivar, was also invited to our meetings. This is the basis of the allegations against us,” he said.

He said that the Swami had taken part in a programme of the circle in Thrissur in January and criticised Mr Narendra Modi’s policies. “The plan is to stamp us as a Maoist faction within the KSU and put our supporters in the organization in dilemma,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Balram ridiculed the allegations through his Facebook post. None of the members of the WhatsApp group circulating the alleged messages were available for comments. Mr Anoop said that if they continue to circulate such messages, he would file a complaint with the police cyber cell.
