BOATH (ADILABAD): Timely rains revived the hopes of farmers, who were worried over adverse conditions for cotton and soya crops. The sown seeds are getting germinated with the onset of Monsoor in the erstwhile Adilabad district.
There is a 90 per cent germination of cotton and soya seeds in most areas. Many farmers feared that the seeds will get withered with less moisture following the scanty rainfall. The last four days saw moderate rains.
Farmers of the Boath area say that there was sufficient rainfall but no heavy rain. Farmer Kathuri Lasmanna of Sandi village in Bela mandal said he sowed cotton on five acres and soya on seven acres. Both the seeds got good germination with timely rains.
He said moderate rains are good for germination and that standing crops in the initial stages would get affected by the heavy rains.
Kodapa Jangu of Mamidiguda of Boath mandal said the moderate rains saved many farmers this season.
Many farmers cultivated cotton and Soya in the Adilabad district as also erstwhile Adilabad. Last year, the cotton crop was cultivated in 4 lakh acres in the Adilabad district and 18 lakh acres in the erstwhile Adilabad district.
However, many farmers were disappointed with the low price for cotton in the last Kharif and complained that they were exploited by the middlemen and private traders of cotton ginning and pressing industries.
The central government has announced an MSP at Rs.6,380 for cotton last year and the central government raised it to Rs 7,020 this year. MSP for Soya was increased to Rs 4,600 this season from the Rs 4,300 last year.
