State: Delay in publishing results hurt students

An expert is asked to value the paper if the difference remains even after the second round of valuation.

Revaluation is a window for grievance redressal for students who feel that they have been denied justice in the normal valuation for board exams in class X and XII. But does it serve its purpose? DC probes state and CBSE streams to find answers

Thiruvananthapuram: The revaluation of SSLC and higher secondary papers often fails to help the students who seek admissions to higher courses. The results of revaluation are announced only after the admissions are completed in schools that follow the state syllabus.

There is a three-tier revaluation process in which a paper is evaluated again if there is a 10 percent increase in the marks scored. An expert is asked to value the paper if the difference remains even after the second round of valuation.

Mr N. Sreekumar, general secretary, All-Kerala School Teachers Union (AKSTU), told Deccan Chronicle that the admissions to higher studies are completed before the results of revaluation are announced. The students should write the Save-A- Year examinations (SAY) as the results are announced in a time-bound manner, he said.

Sources said that the regular students who appeared for Plus-Two or SSLC in March can apply for SAY examinations in June for the subjects in which they did not qualify.

Regular students who scored D+ grade or above in all subjects in the Plus-Two in the March examination can apply for improvement examination in June to upgrade only one subject of their choice, sources said.

Normally, revaluation will not be allowed in mathematics, physics and chemistry papers which have double valuation. However, the students can apply for the photostat copies of the answer papers for these subjects, sources said.

Mr S. Manoj, general secretary, Aided Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (AHSTA), admitted that the revaluation results come after the admissions to higher courses are completed.

Earlier, the results were published after much delay. However, now the situation has improved as the results are available within 20 to 25 days of submitting the answer sheets, Mr Manoj said.

However, the results of SAY and improvement examinations come before the admissions to higher courses are completed, he said.
