Kochi Corporation to draw up Thevara-Perandoor Canal revival plan

The canal has an important ecological role to play as the 10.5-km long water body flushes out the excess water to backwaters.

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will initiate a rejuvenation plan of the of the city's longest canal, the Thevara - Perandoor Canal, based on the ongoing GIS mapping, said Mayor Soumini Jain. The GIS-based mapping is a significant initiative as the survey result will be the basic data for rejuvenation of the canal, she said on Tuesday after inspecting the survey process progressing at Panampilly Nagar.

The canal has an important ecological role to play as the 10.5-km long water body flushes out the excess water to backwaters. However, over the year as the city grew, the canal became a dumping yard for urban waste and the natural draining of water got blocked.

"The GIS-based mapping is a role model and based on the survey a scientific rejuvenation programme can be chalked out. With no proper data on the length and width of canals in the city, the civic body is unable to conduct restoration works to address the effects of climate change," added Ms. Jain.

Corporation standing committee chairpersons V.K. Minimol, Shainy Mathew, K.V.P. Krishna Kumar, Gracy Joseph, Corporation councillors, secretary Amit Meena and other officials also accompanied the Mayor during her visit.
