Hyderabad: Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences wing to be shut

Endocrinologist Dr Rekha Singh, who took care of the department has taken ill and is on leave for three months.

Hyderabad: The Endocrinology department at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences will not be working from July 15, due to lack of faculty. Endocrinologist Dr Rekha Singh, who took care of the department has taken ill and is on leave for three months.

Her illness has now shut down the entire department of the hospital – temporarily. There are over 100 patients, who visit the faculty for diabetes and thyroid medicines. But with no replacement the unit had ceased operations as it cannot be manned by junior doctors.

Dr K. Manohar, director of Nims said a notification for recruitment of staff has been given and doctors for the endocrinology department too have been added.

Since 2004, there has been a major attrition at Nims, with many doctors opting for private hospitals. The exodus has triggered a massive shortage of specialists at the hospital.
