One dies as rain wreaks havoc in Alappuzha
ALAPPUZHA: Rough sea and torrential rains continue to batter coastal Alappuzha district. Over 30 houses were partially damaged. A person identified as Sajeev, 38, Kochuparambil, Cheruthana near Haripad was reportedly drowned in a pond after heavy rains.
It also inundated low-lying areas of Alappuzha municipality, Kainakary, Kavalam, Edathua, Veeyapuram, Mavelikkara, Cherthala, Ambalappuzha and Kayamkulam. Traffic through Alappuzha- Changanassery (AC) Road disrupted partially by water logging. The district administration opened relief camps in at least 19 places across the region.
Sea erosion was reported from coastal areas of Chennaveli, Chally, Arthunkal, Punnapra, Purakkad, Ambalappuzha, Koman, Thottapally, Thrikkunnapuzha. For the last couple of days, heavy wind lashed in Kayamkulam damaging many houses. Meanwhile, works minister G. Sudhakaran visited the worst hit Neerkunnam and Ambalappuzha coastal belts and ordered immediate construction of protection walls in the places like Madhava Junction and Komana.
District collector R. Girija said her administration was estimating the total loss and had opened control rooms at all taluk offices and the district collectorate.
