Dr P V Guharaj, Kerala's first forensic surgeon, is dead
KOZHIKODE: First forensic surgeon of the state, Dr P.V. Guharaj (91) died here on Sunday. It was his crucial testimony in court in the sensational Rajan murder case during Emergency that helped take action against the policemen involved in the torture and killing of P. Rajan, a student of the then Regional Engineering College, Kozhikode.
Dr Guharaj, a pioneer in the forensic science in the state, retired from the service as Forensic Director from Kozhikode Medical College. He took initiative in establishing forensic department in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Medical Colleges. He also served in Nigeria for a brief period. He authored a memoir 'The life and experiences of a Forensic Surgeon.'
A native of Kaypamangalam , Thirussur, Dr Guharaj is survived by wife Dr Aisha Guharaj (former state health education department head) and children Dr Balraj (paediatrician , Kozhikode Medical College), Dr Beena (Gynaecology, Kozhikode Medical College), Dr Bala (Gynaecology, Kozhikode Co-Operative Hospital).
