Police combs Kochi for drunken driving
Kochi: As many as 94 persons were booked for drunken driving while action was taken against 485 others for rash and negligent driving, during a special drive called ‘City Clean Combing’, carried out by the Kochi Police. The drive, which began at 3 pm on Saturday, was carried out simultaneously at various locations including lodges in the city. As part of it, 24 cases each were registered for drug peddling and sale of banned tobacco products. A total of 26 persons were arrested for drug-peddling. A total of 76 cases were lodged against various persons for creating a ruckus at public places under the influence of alcohol.
“The intense checking also resulted in the arrest of 69 persons against whom there were arrest warrants. Eight persons who were declared absconders by the court were also taken into custody,” said M.P. Dinesh, Kochi City police commissioner. The Kochi Police also took 94 into preventive custody. Meanwhile, a total of 16 persons were arrested from Kadavantra, Palarivattom, Kaloor, Menaka, Ernakulam South, Infopark and Fort Kochi for various crimes against women, including eve-teasing. The drive also saw cops seizing a total of 42 autorickshaws which were found operating without meters. The ‘City Clean Combing’ exercise would be continued in the coming days as part of efforts to cut rising crime in the city and nearby regions, the officer said.
