Health minister K K Shailaja, PG doctors meet today to avert stir
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Functioning of government medical colleges in the state may be hit from Tuesday as the Kerala Medical Post-Graduates Association has decided to go on an indefinite strike if the talks with health minister K.K. Shailaja on Monday failed to find a solution to their demand that the three-year bond system be scrapped. Additional chief secretary (health) Rajeev Sadanandan will also attend the meeting on Monday, it is learnt.
KMPGA sources said that the strike would be intensified if the government remained unmoved. House surgeons will join the strike from March 15 and even emergency services would be boycotted from the next day. A demonstration would be staged in front of the secretariat on Friday. The association would also call on political leaders to gain support for the stir.
The PG doctors had staged a token strike on March 7 raising the demand. A meeting between KMPGA leaders and the minister held on Thursday remained inconclusive. The students are firm on their stand against the three-year bond system, terming it unscientific. They pointed out that the bond was meant only for medical education sector and hence one could not be shifted to other institutions during the bond period.
