Retired high court judge to oversee Tamil Film Producers Council election

The TFPC submitted that it has no objection for appointing a retired judge.

Chennai: The Madras high court has appointed Justice S. Rajeswaran, a retired judge of the high court, as the election officer to conduct the election to the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC).

Justice K. Kalyanasundaram passed order on a batch of applications arising out of two suits filed by K. Rajan, A.R. Murugadoss, A.G. Alagappan and R. Kishorekumar. While one set of applications, sought direction to TFPC to conduct elections to its office-bearers for 2017-19 strictly in accordance with bye-laws of TFPC, the other set of applications sought appointment of a retired judge of the high court to hold the election.

They contended that without issuing notice to the general body, by fixing a place and time and without appointing an election officer, the election notification was issued, besides increasing fees for candidates, arbitrarily. February 5 has been declared as the election date, but one was willing to take up the task as election officer due to lack of unity among members, they added. The TFPC submitted that it has no objection for appointing a retired judge. Stating that there was no need to deal with the increase in fees, the judge appointed Justice S. Rajeswaran, as the election officer and said the election be held by issuing 21 days clear notice.
