Chennai: Sankalp, an Accredited Vocational Institute (AVI) certified by The National Institute of Open School (NIOS) that has two centres in Chennai with 240 students, has been recognized as the best Special Needs School in the Annual Education World India School rankings 2023, for the second year in a row.
The centres now conduct courses in bakery & confectionery, stitching & embroidery and computer applications and data entry for those above 14 years of age with Special Needs, a press release said on Monday.
To help address the paucity of qualified special needs teachers, Sankalp established a two-year Diploma for Teacher Training in special education for Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD) in Autism, Specific Learning Disability & Intellectual Disability, certified by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Any person who has completed 12th grade with 50% marks is eligible to apply for the course.
About 18 million people in India are diagnosed with autism, which is estimated to affect 1 in every 150 children in India, with a higher prevalence among males than females.
