Hyderabad: Sudanese kid gets a rare heart sugery

The procedure lasted four hours and doctors said the child has completely recovered.

Hyderabad: A month-old baby who had breathing problems was brought from the African nation of Sudan to Rainbow Children’s Heart Institute where a complex surgery saved her.

A cardiothoracic surgery called the Norwood procedure was carried out using the pulmonary artery to route oxygenated blood to the under-developed side of the heart.

The procedure is complex and is challenging as it has a very low tolerance for errors. Dr Tapan Kumar Dash, paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, said, “The skill is involved in creating a channel so that there is blood supply to the lungs. The left side of the heart was underdeveloped and the child could not breathe. For such tiny babies we have to use high-end equipment where the parts are magnified to get a clear view.”

The procedure lasted four hours and doctors said the chi-ld has completely recovered.
