Open ATMs fail to bring relief in Kerala
KOCHI: Even after the opening of ATM centres after two days' shut down and the extended working hours of banks, there is no respite for the difficulties caused by the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. People are still running from pillar to post to get the old currency notes changed with fresh ones. Though ATMs centres have been reopened, only those ones where the banks directly fill currency have cash. Money was not available in ATMs which are managed by private agencies, mostly in city outskirts and rural areas. Most of the ATMs remain closed even in city areas.
Long queues were seen in front of those ATMS where cash was available from early morning. In Tripunithura, the long queue in front of the SBT ATM and the panic rush of people created traffic chaos. "My daughter is going for an excursion from her school today. She needs money for food and refreshments. What can I do with the only Rs 50 left in my wallet, I could get Rs 1,500 after waiting in front of the ATM for nearly an hour," said Mohan Kumar, a parent from Thiruvankulam.
The banks have informed customers that ATM centres located in distant and rural areas will be filled by the private agencies concerned the next day. Meanwhile, rush continues at banks to change the old currencies. Since, the banks will be functioning on Saturday and Sunday, the situation might be improved by Monday, it is generally observed.
