Vadapalani, Anna Nagar flyovers to open soon
Chennai: The work on the long awaited flyovers at Anna Arch and Vadapalani junctions are expected to be completed by this month-end and subsequently opened for traffic.
The opening of second L-shaped flyover at Anna arch connecting EVR Periyar (EVRP) Road with Third Avenue Road will provide much needed relief to the motorists in one of the busiest junctions in the city. The Vadapalani flyover that runs parallel to either side of the Chennai Metro rail will ease movement of vehicles on the Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Road and Arcot Road intersection.
Anna Arch flyover: This flyover is one of the two L-shaped flyovers that are being constructed at a cost of Rs 117 crore at the intersection of Poonamallee High Road and Anna Nagar third avenue. The first L-shaped flyover which was opened for traffic in March this year, begins from EVR Periyar Road near Anna Arch and end on Nelson Manickam Road for vehicles moving towards NM Road from Anna Nagar III Avenue and from Koyambedu. “Works are nearing completion on the second structure that begins on EVRP Road near Nelson Manickam Road and end in front of the Government Siddha Hospital in Anna Nagar III Avenue. While one arm will loop back to EVRP Road to allow the vehicles from NM Road that wants to proceed towards Aminjikarai side. We are hoping to complete all the works by this month end and subsequently open it for traffic,” said a senior highways department official.
The overall objective of the project was to do away with signals in NM Road — EVRP Road junction and Anna Arch junction. The signals in the NM Road — EVRP Road junction could be taken off but the signals will continue to be operated until the construction of the third flyover from Anna Nagar Third Avenue to EVRP Road towards Arumbakkam.
The opening of the second L-shaped flyover will ease much of the traffic in one of the busiest junctions in the city, said R. Saravanan, a resident of NSK Nagar.
The design of the flyover, work on which began in June 2011, was changed in November 2012 after the state government decided to retain the twin Anna arches.
