Chennai: 1 killed, 8 injured in road mishap

Police identified the driver as Charles Anthony, who was driving his taxi under the influence of alcohol.

Chennai: A woman was killed and eight others were injured when a speeding car driven by a drunken man, ran amok and into people waiting for bus on East Coast Road at Injambakkam on Monday evening.

The deceased, Vasantha Devi, a resident of Villivakkam and working as a cook in a house in Neelangarai, was waiting for bus when the car hit her. She died on the spot.

Police identified the driver as Charles Anthony, who was driving his taxi under the influence of alcohol. The driver has been booked under IPC section of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The car also went out of control and hit a share auto in which eight people were travelling.

The injured, including two brothers Aravind Sekar and Anand Sekar have been admitted to a hospital. Police arrested Charles Anthony and during initial investigation, he confessed that he was drunk and was driving his vehicle at a high speed.

A complaint has been registered at Shastri Nagar traffic police station.
It may be recalled that three weeks back, the national racer Vikash Anand of Chennai, who was allegedly drunk and driving a Porsche, had slammed the car into parked autos, killing one and injuring 8 others on Cathedral Road. Vikash Anand and Charan Kumar, who owned the car, were arrested by the police.
